Global WitnessThe Ashden Trust is a grant-making charity established in 1989 and is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. Its priorities are climate change, sustainable development and improving the quality of life of vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

You can find out more about the Trust and the kinds of projects we have supported, as well as checking whether you are eligible to apply for funding by following the links on the left-hand side of this page.

The Trustees are committed to use fully the trust’s assets to fulfil its mission in line with its fiduciary responsibilities. It has allocated a proportion of the Trust’s expendable endowment for impact investing that will not only result in a financial return, but also produce social and environmental benefits that accord with the Trust’s objectives. Ashden Trust is a signatory to Divest Invest which commits the trust to sell any shares in fossil fuel holdings and invest a proportion of the endowment in ‘climate solutions’, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean tech.

Please note that Ashden.org is a separate charity. It is supported by the Ashden Trust

Each year the Ashden Trust provides a grant towards the core costs of Ashden Sustainable Solutions, Better Lives. This charity was set up by Sarah Butler-Sloss to raise awareness of sustainable energy to combat climate change and energy poverty.

In the developing world 1.2 billion people lack access to reliable energy and 3 billion people cook on smoky inefficient stoves and fires. In the industrialised world our dependence on fossil fuels and inefficient use of energy is the main cause of climate change, threatens energy security and our future economic security. To address these challenges, Ashden rewards, supports and promotes local renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives in the UK, developing world and emerging economies.
